Government officials, yesterday, got more than they bargained at the May Day rally in Abuja, as workers disrupted the programme at the Eagle Square.
President Muhammadu Buhari’s representative at the event, Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige was booed and not allowed to deliver the president’s speech.
Attempt by former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole was roundly rejected by the angry workers who also booed him.
The workers, Daily Sun gathered were angered that neither President Buhari nor his vice, had attended the International Workers’ Day celebrations since assumption of office May 29, 2015.
They were further infuriated that the labour minister, though present at the Eagle Square, had asked the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry to read his address.
The situation was so tensed that security was reinforced for and around the Three Arms Zone.
At this period, Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker of House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara had been hurriedly taken away from the venue by their security details.
As at 3pm when the workers had virtually vacated the Eagle Square, vehicular traffic was still being diverted from the Federal Secretariat precinct of Shehu Shagari Way as police vans were used to block the Bayeslsa House and Bullet House ends of the road.
