President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday, attributed the lack of support women often receive from fellow women during elections to the conduct of some female political office holders who, he said, failed to use previous opportunities to advance the interests of other women.
Akpabio said the actions of some women who had occupied public office in the past had discouraged other women from rallying behind female candidates seeking elective positions.
The Senate President made the remarks while receiving members of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria, led by its National President, Dr Lima Ahmed, on a courtesy visit to his office at the National Assembly.
According to a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, Akpabio said the failure of some women leaders to justify the confidence reposed in them had created distrust among female voters.
He noted that rather than opening doors for other women after attaining political office, some had misused the opportunities, making it more difficult for other women to gain support in subsequent elections.
Akpabio urged women to unite and deliberately support one another in politics and leadership, stressing that greater solidarity among women would improve their representation in governance.
The Senate President also assured the association of his support, as well as that of the Senate, for its forthcoming international ladies’ golf tournament scheduled to be held at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja.
On insecurity, Akpabio said the Tinubu administration was making significant efforts to restore peace across the country, expressing confidence that the security challenges confronting Nigeria would soon be overcome.
Earlier, Ahmed thanked the Senate President for receiving the delegation, formally invited him to the tournament and decorated him as the Grand Patron of the association.
