Mrs. Affiong Peters, a middle-aged passenger, has been confirmed dead after she suddenly collapsed upon disembarking from a commercial bus in Calabar, the Cross River State Capital on Saturday night.
The incident, suspected to be a medical emergency, occurred at about 11:30 p.m. at Edgerly by William George in Calabar.
Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the driver of the mini-bus, Okon John, reported at Atakpa Police Station that Mrs. Peters stepped out of the vehicle with 7 other passengers and immediately sat on the ground before becoming unresponsive and unable to speak.
“Concerned passengers assisted in returning her to the vehicle, and she was promptly taken to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for emergency medical attention.
” Regrettably, she was later confirmed dead by medical personnel,” Eitokpah said.
He added that the deceased’s family has been identified and notified, and that arrangements are being made for the preservation of her remains.
The Police Spokesman said there is no indication of foul play at the moment, but the matter is being handled in accordance with police procedures.
