Tragedy struck at Umuogbulu Umuoguta, Ndegwu in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State on Wednesday as a woman in her late 30s, Happiness Anumodu, was completely razed in an inferno that took her life.

A source from the community told our correspondent that the incident, which occurred about 9:55 pm, has thrown the entire community into total grief.

According to the source, Happiness, as she was popularly known, who is unmarried, lit a candle and went to sleep. Unfortunately, the light, it was said, after burning the candle at both ends, spread to other inflammable items in the room.

“This is a sad moment for us, nobody expected this to happen. She went to bed at about 9 pm and suddenly we noticed smoke and some objects burning but nobody could enter the building because of the wild fire.

“Other occupants of the building, as we gathered, noticed the raging fire on time and ran out leaving only Happiness, who had been in a deep sleep before it started, unable to make it alive.”
