Adehimself’s latest menswear collection, Expression, designed by fashion designer and illustrator, Adewumi Adeyemi Obafemi, showcases clean lines and confidence.
The collection debuted on June 14, 2023 at an in-door private runway display that’s opened to customers, lovers of the brand, fashion enthusiasts, and experts.
The Expression reflects Adewumi’s technical prowess, aligning with the brand’s refined craftsmanship and innovative tailoring reputation. The collection offers an array of checkered shirts, plain white shirts, and white shirts with artistic prints and bold lettering, all paired with loose-fitting cotton trousers that balance relaxed comfort and structured elegance.
The construction quality of the outfits is impeccable, as evident in the precise stitching that adorns each piece. The stitch choice – a mix of clean topstitches and subtle lockstitches – ensures durability without sacrificing beauty. The seam allowances, measured meticulously, reflect the designer’s understanding of how proportion impacts fit and form. For example, the trousers showcase an expertly crafted waistband with reinforced inner linings that ensure comfort.

The white shirts, featuring artistic prints, highlight Adewumi’s illustrative abilities. The prints are bold yet tasteful, with balanced proportions that enhance the garment rather than overwhelm it. The trousers, crafted from mid-weight cotton, exemplify versatility.
They can be styled with dress shoes for formal settings and sneakers for a casual edge. The pocket placement is also deliberate, ensuring functionality.
The collection, however, begs the question of cohesiveness in that the checkered shirts, alongside art-laden white shirts, feels like two distinct collections attempting to coexist. While the checkered shirts pay homage to timeless menswear, the artistic prints veer into a different creative direction. Also, the trousers aim for versatility, but Adewumi missed an opportunity to experiment with more structured pleats or tapered shapes that could enhance the adaptability of the collection. The cotton fabric of the trousers has a soft texture and breathable quality, suitable for diverse climates, but they lack the robustness needed to ensure the cloth lasts for a long time.
Expression will likely attract a niche audience of younger professionals and casual trendsetters, but it risks alienating consumers looking for more distinctive, polished pieces. While the versatility of some garments will ensure moderate commercial success, the lack of a strong conceptual foundation could limit its longevity in the market.
Adewumi, through Expression, aims to provide a wardrobe that transitions seamlessly between formal and semi-casual occasions, and he scores decently in execution as the collection reveals moments of brilliance alongside areas demanding refinement.
