Winners emerge in USLF essay competition

The Umaru Shinkafi Legacy Foundation (USLF) has successfully concluded its first Regional Essay Competition.

Jamilu Bala Ajiya, coordinator of the foundation, in a statement made available to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi, stated that the maiden edition of the regional essay competition was in commemoration of the ninth anniversary of late Shinkafi passing.

She explained that the competition targeted undergraduate students who are indigenes of Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara States, and are currently enrolled in tertiary institutions across the North Western of Nigeria.

Said she: “Since its inception, USLF has implemented a series of impactful annual initiatives, including Ramadan charity programmes, nationwide scholarships for underprivileged students, and two high-level security summits. The 2025 essay competition marked another milestone in the foundation’s on-going commitment to promoting education and youth development.

“At the close of submissions on June 30, 2025, a total of 610 entries were received from students across 25 tertiary institutions in the North West.

“Following a rigorous review process led by Mallam Mahmud Jega, Abubakar Idris, a Dental Surgery student at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, emerged as the overall winner.”

She stated further that Idris would be awarded a brand-new tricycle, while Hafiz Sani Galadima, a Nursing Sciences student at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, secured second place and would receive a motorcycle.

The third prize, she said has been awarded to Asiya Muhammad Danssanda, a student of Educational Economics at the Federal University, Gusau, who would go home with ₦1,000,000.

She added that in total, 15 winners were selected to receive cash prizes ranging from ₦100,000 to ₦800,000.

Meanwhile, President-elect of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and Chief Executive Officer of Medicaid Cancer Foundation, Dr Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, in a statement made available to journalists, congratulated all the winners and reaffirmed USLF’s commitment to promoting intellectual development and meaningful public discourse among young people in the region.
