From a modest beginning in Eha-Alumona, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, Chief Williams Agbo has built one of the notable indigenous manufacturing groups in the South-East, demonstrating how vision, resilience and enterprise can transform local opportunities into sustainable economic value.

As Founder and Chairman of Willson Group, he has spent decades building businesses that contribute to Nigeria’s industrial development while creating employment and supporting local production.

His entrepreneurial drive began in the construction industry in the late 1970s before he ventured into commerce and distribution, eventually becoming one of the leading distributors of Golden Guinea Breweries products in Nigeria. However, rather than being defined by the collapse of the brewery, he turned the challenge into an opportunity to establish what would become a diversified industrial enterprise.

In 1996, he founded Willson Group, beginning with a palm kernel crushing plant in Nsukka. Over the years, the business expanded into fully integrated manufacturing operations, producing critical industrial inputs and consumer products. The company’s palm kernel processing operations produce derivatives that serve as raw materials for manufacturers in the food, animal feed and soap industries.

Through strategic diversification, Willson Group, under his watch expanded into vegetable oil refining, gas distribution and food manufacturing. Brands such as Solive Vegetable Oil, Besties Instant Noodles and Willis Gas have become familiar names in households and businesses across the country.

The success of these products show his commitment to quality, local manufacturing and the development of indigenous brands that are capable of competing effectively in the Nigerian market.

Chief Agbo has continued to invest in production capacity, agricultural development and value addition. Its extensive palm plantations in Adani, Nporogwu and other locations provide raw materials that support manufacturing operations while generating economic opportunities within rural communities.

The integrated nature of the business has created linkages across agriculture, manufacturing, logistics and distribution, contributing to broader economic development.

Beyond business growth, Agbo has distinguished himself through his commitment to employment generation. Thousands of Nigerians have benefited directly and indirectly from jobs and business opportunities created within the company’s ecosystem.

His investments have supported suppliers, transporters, distributors, retailers and numerous small businesses connected to the company’s operations. His impact also extends to education, youth empowerment, community development and support for public institutions.

Through scholarship programmes, entrepreneurial support initiatives and investments in infrastructure, he has consistently demonstrated a belief that business success should translate into societal progress.

For being a shining example of indigenous industrial enterprise, having built businesses that create jobs, add value to local resources and strengthen Nigeria’s productive capacity, Chief Williams Agbo is winner of The Sun Industrialist of the Year Award 2026.
