The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has pledged to develop essential infrastructure in Wassa District to support the planned relocation of traders and dealers currently operating as Apo Mechanics.
The relocation initiative aims to decongest the Outer Southern Expressway corridor and provide the traders with a well-equipped, permanent marketplace in Wassa, improving their business environment and overall quality of life.
Speaking on Friday during the inauguration of a committee tasked with overseeing the relocation process, he emphasised the commitment of the current administration to finally fulfil a long-standing promise. The committee, which he will chair, includes key officials such as the Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, Directors of Development Control, Land, Urban and Regional Planning, Survey, and Resettlement and Compensation.
Wike acknowledged that previous administrations had repeatedly pledged to move the traders occupying part of the Outer Southern Expressway corridor but failed to act. “It’s been promise on promise since 2011 without fulfilment,” he said, “but President Bola Tinubu’s administration has made a firm commitment, and the process has now begun.”
Highlighting a key upcoming step, the minister revealed that on June 27, he and leaders of the Apo Mechanics will visit Wassa to inspect the designated permanent site. “This visit will help us determine the critical infrastructure needed to facilitate your relocation,” Wike explained. “This collective effort is to ensure that Tinubu’s promise is fulfilled.”
He also urged the traders and dealers to maintain unity, cautioning against internal conflicts. “You will achieve more if you work together,” he said, adding that the government’s role includes making people happy. “The FCT Administration will do everything possible to make the Apo traders and dealers happy,” Wike concluded.
