From Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, Abuja

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has given the green light for the refurbishment of the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja, starting with the clubhouse, emphasizing that the facility remains government property.

The announcement came during Wike’s visit to the club’s Board of Trustees, led by President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem. The Board had highlighted the urgent need for renovation, noting that the club’s facilities have deteriorated from heavy use and inadequate maintenance since its opening in 1991.

Wike revealed plans to engage Julius Berger, the original constructor of the golf course, to oversee the renovation project. He also issued a stern warning to anyone attempting to claim ownership of the club through underhanded means.

“You know I’m not a golfer. This is my first time coming here and I have developed an interest. My interest is that this is government property, and I am proud that you manage it. When I came here, I was quite impressed. Like you said, many countries benefit from tourism,” Wike stated.

He added, “With events like the ECOWAS meeting happening here, golfers will want to play. This is important. We will not allow anyone to take what belongs to us. Government is not a good manager, but we must protect this asset.”

The minister highlighted the importance of restoring the golf course, saying, “Anyone with good taste and who cares about the country should support this renovation. It is better to refurbish the place, open it up, and prevent it from falling into disrepair.”

He further explained, “We want visitors to have a place to relax, enjoy themselves, and socialize at the club. I consider this a priority that must be addressed immediately.”

Earlier, Dongban-Mensem appealed for the club’s upgrade to match the government’s recent renovations of the International Conference Centre. She expressed confidence that under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Wike’s leadership, the club would benefit from similar development efforts.

A member of the Board of Trustees,Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, in appreciation, presented the Minister with a special golf memorabilia. He described Wike as “the most misunderstood Nigerian and a man who likes to deliver.” Runsewe also promised to provide Wike with a special golf club later this week to encourage him to take up the sport.
