Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Monday convened a meeting with traditional chiefs and representatives from the Kpaduma and Guzape communities to address concerns over the ongoing road construction project and the evacuation of affected residents.

Held at the Minister’s conference room in Lifecamp, the meeting aimed to ease tensions arising from residents’ presence in areas designated for major road infrastructure development intended to improve traffic flow and connectivity within Abuja.

He acknowledged the communities’ strong ties to their ancestral lands but stressed the necessity of the project for the capital’s development. He assured the chiefs that the government is committed to fairness and justice, promising compensation for affected structures and prompt issuance of Right of Occupancy (R of Os) for resettlement areas, similar to arrangements made with the Gishiri community in Katampe district.

“We are not here to displace anyone unjustly. This is about building a better Abuja for all. We will ensure your people are properly compensated and given legal documents for their new homes,” he said.

He clarified that compensation would cover only structures along the road corridor, not entire communities, and instructed that the compensation rates be doubled to ensure fairness.

“I have told the Director of Resettlement to go and make a valuation. But the rate you people are using is too small. Increase their rate. If they are earning N50, give them N100,” he stressed.

In response, the Sapeyi of Garki, Usman Kupi, who led the traditional leaders, expressed gratitude for the Minister’s transparency and engagement. They acknowledged the developmental benefits of the road project and pledged cooperation with the evacuation and resettlement process.

“We are grateful for the Honourable Minister’s assurance and the respect shown to our people. We will support this effort in the interest of peace and progress,” the Sapeyi remarked.

The meeting concluded positively, with both parties committing to continued dialogue to ensure a smooth and respectful transition for affected families.

Also present were the Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council, Christopher Maikalangu, the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, and other senior FCT officials.
