Wike denies restricting opposition access to Eagle Square

• Says Kugbo bus terminal infrastructure integrity intact despite rainstorm havoc

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Monday dismissed allegations that political parties are being denied access to Eagle Square, describing such claims as “unfounded” and “attempts to gain public sympathy”.

Speaking to reporters during a routine project inspection on Monday, Wike clarified that no formal application had been received from the parties in question. He maintained that the venue is available to any group—citing the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) as examples—provided they follow due process through the National Sports Commission and pay the requisite fees. “We do not deny access; these events actually generate revenue for the government,” he noted.

The minister also addressed rumours regarding the structural failure of the Kugbo Bus Terminal. He clarified that, while a recent severe windstorm damaged the roofing sheets due to the building’s elevated terrain, the structural integrity of the terminal remains intact.

He confirmed that repairs are already ongoing and urged the public to disregard reports of a “collapse,” emphasising that no lives were lost.

Wike expressed satisfaction with the pace of ongoing infrastructure projects across the city, confirming that several key road and streetlight projects are slated for completion by the end of May.

During a site inspection on Monday, the minister revealed that road works are expected to be finished by May 15, followed by the full installation of streetlights by May 31. A major highlight of the tour was the visit to the Wassa artisan site, a project designed to relocate mechanics and other informal sector operators to a purpose-built hub.

“Successive administrations have promised this relocation, but we are finally fulfilling that commitment,” he stated. The minister emphasised that the government is already working on the modalities to move artisans into the new facility, which is being handled by CGC Nigeria Limited.

Wike attributed the steady progress to a “mutual commitment” in which contractors deliver on time, and the government ensures prompt payment.
