In a bid to ensure the safety of residents during the upcoming festive season, Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged security agencies to intensify their efforts. This call to action was made during the recent FCT Security Committee meeting.

Director, Press (Office of the Minister), Anthony Ogunleye in a statement said, during the meeting, Wike expressed his concerns about the potential rise in criminal activities associated with the holiday season. “Criminals will like to take advantage and try to make it uncomfortable for our citizens,” he warned.

He acknowledged the commendable work done by security agencies thus far but stressed the need for ongoing vigilance. “We have to continue to be vigilant, to make sure that there is no room for anybody to manipulate. The people in Abuja must sleep with their two eyes closed and can run their businesses,” he added.

Following the Minister’s remarks, FCT Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu, outlined the strategic measures being implemented to enhance security throughout the territory. He announced that joint teams from various security agencies would be conducting clearance operations in the days leading up to Christmas and New Year celebrations.

“We are intensifying our activities at all borders—exit and entry into the FCT,” he stated, emphasising a collaborative approach with neighboring states.

Disu also indicated that specific areas identified as potential hotspots would see an increased security presence. “The Nigeria Airforce is bringing in their helicopters for surveillance of identified areas while the Nigeria Army, Navy, NSCDC, and Police are ready and already clearing the bushes,” he said.

He assured residents that they can expect a significant increase in visible security patrols during this festive period. “You are going to be seeing all of us patrolling together. These are sights not usually seen under normal circumstances,” Disu noted. This coordinated effort aims not only to reassure residents but also to deter potential criminal activity.

Disu concluded by expressing gratitude for the cooperation of residents and emphasised the importance of community involvement in maintaining safety. He urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or activities to security agencies promptly.
