The Conflict Research Network West Africa (CORN West Africa) is set to address the importance of proper management of social protection policies in promoting peacebuilding and reducing insecurity in the country.

The conference, scheduled to take place on November 8th and 9th at the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) in Abuja, will bring together renowned experts and scholars to critically review the current practices of social protection policies in Nigeria.

Dr. Tarila Marclint Ebiede, the Director of CORN West Africa, emphasised the need for effective implementation and management of social protection policies, such as conditional cash transfers, support for internally displaced persons, and school feeding programs. He highlighted their potential to contribute to peacebuilding efforts and reduce conflict and insecurity in the country.

The conference will feature keynote addresses from distinguished speakers, including Professor Remi Aiyede from the Partnership for Social and Governance Research in Africa (PASGR), Hon. Abdulaziz Danladi, the National Coordinator for the National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), Cristian Munduate, UNICEF Country Representative Nigeria, and Chris Pycroft, Development Director of the British High Commission, Nigeria. These speakers will provide invaluable insights and expertise on social protection policies and their impact on society.

Dr. Ebiede further stated, “This conference is timely as it coincides with the implementation of various social protection programmes introduced by the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to alleviate the economic challenges faced by Nigerian citizens.

“The conference will analyse the effectiveness of the programmes, including conditional cash transfers, school feeding programmes, COVID-19 palliatives, and support for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Nigeria.”

The conference aims to examine the relationship between social protection programs and peacebuilding initiatives, conflict management, and the reduction of insecurity in Nigeria. It will also focus on the politics behind Nigeria’s social register and its implications for poverty alleviation. The event will serve as an opportunity for policymakers to receive valuable feedback on ongoing programs and policies, with the aim of enhancing their outcomes.

Scholars, researchers, and policy analysts from universities, think tanks, NGOs, and international organizations from all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria and abroad will attend the conference. Hon. Abdulaziz Danladi, Cristian Munduate, and Chris Pycroft will be special guests, showcasing the importance of the conference and its potential impact.

The CORN conference on Social Protection in Fragile and Conflict Affected Societies in Nigeria promises to be a significant step towards harnessing the power of social protection policies for peace, security, and development in Nigeria.
