Why technology is key to defeating insecurity — Sani Usman

A former Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Sani Usman (retd.), has identified technology as a critical tool in the fight against insecurity, saying it is making it increasingly difficult for criminals and terrorists to evade security agencies.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Usman said advances in technology have significantly strengthened counter-terrorism operations by enabling security forces to track and identify criminal elements more effectively.

According to him, while some criminals may initially evade arrest, technology ensures they are eventually traced and brought to justice.

“Technology helps in the sense that even if a criminal has a tendency of committing crime, the system will eventually catch up with him,” he said.

The retired army general noted that the growing use of surveillance and digital tracking could also serve as a deterrent, discouraging people from engaging in criminal activities.

“Somehow people will have a second thought because you know that you can hide, but there is a limit to which you can even hide because you can’t go far,” Usman added.

He stressed the need for continued investment in technology-driven security systems, maintaining that modern tools are essential for improving intelligence gathering, enhancing surveillance and strengthening Nigeria’s efforts to combat terrorism and other forms of criminality.
