Nollywood actor Zuby Michael has alleged that fear of creating future competitors is one reason some industry executives and gatekeepers are reluctant to mentor Igbo talents.
Michael made the claim during an interview with Broadway TV, where he discussed the challenges and dynamics surrounding opportunities for emerging talents in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
According to the actor, some industry players may hesitate to mentor Igbo creatives because they believe they can quickly acquire the skills they are taught and eventually surpass their mentors.
“People are scared because Igbo people are fast learners and they are capable of making it big with just a little,” Michael said.

He argued that an individual who has spent years acquiring knowledge in a particular area of the entertainment business could train an Igbo talent who might master the same skills within a much shorter period.
“You might decide to mentor an Igbo person and what took you 10 years to learn, he will learn it in one year and six months,” he said.
Michael further claimed that the situation could become problematic for some mentors when the person they trained leaves to establish an independent career or business.
“And if you don’t treat him well, he will leave you and start doing the same business you taught him and become your competition. So, people are scared of that,” he said.
