The Vice-Chancellor of Crawford University, Prof Olanrenwaju Makinde, has appealed to the Federal Government to extend assistance to the private universities by adding them to the list of beneficiaries of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

He made the appeal at a press briefing held in Igbesa, Ogun State on the 20th anniversary and the 17th convocation ceremony of the university, which will hold next month. The ceremony will begin with a lecture and unveiling of the anniversary book by the former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof Peter Okebukola.

Makinde, who emphasised the importance of collaborative effort to ensure the success of the educational sector in Nigeria, argued that since private universities are also contributing to the manpower and development of the nation, the Federal Government should consider them for assistance and support.

He noted that such assistance would go a long way in enhancing the motivational power of private tertiary institutions to contribute more to the development of Nigeria.

“When we talk about university, it emanates from the word ‘universal’. So whatever is happening to federal universities, to state universities, should also be extended to private universities, because we contribute to the manpower development of this nation as well as the overall development of this nation,” he stated. On the introduction of CBT exams at the O-levels, Makinde described it as a welcome idea, particularly in the era where technology is evolving.  He noted that Nigeria as a nation could not just lag behind, but move forward.

“So for our students at the secondary school level to participate in writing examination via computer-based test arrangements is a good step in the right direction. But the Federal Government and state government and all stakeholders must join hands together to ensure that the facilities are put in place so that we have seamless examination sessions,” he added.
