Why Ogun youths staged solidarity walk for Tinubu, Abiodun – Lawal

From Laide Raheem, Abeokuta

The National President of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth League, Olamide Lawal, has disclosed why the league organised a solidarity walk for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun.

According to Lawal, the solidarity walk was organised to express gratitude for what he described as the “impactful leadership” of both President Tinubu and Governor Abiodun in Nigeria and Ogun State, respectively, particularly in sectors affecting young people positively.

The National President of the APC Youth League made this known in a statement he personally signed and made available to journalists in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, at the weekend.

He added that the solidarity walk, which took place in Ijebu Ode, was also to commemorate a landmark political event in the state, when supporters of Governor Abiodun were allegedly attacked at the M.K.O. Abiola International Stadium during the build-up to the 2019 general elections.

He noted that despite the brazen political harassment and intimidation of Abiodun by his predecessor at the event, the governor still went on to record a victory at the polls.

Lawal explained that since 2020, the APC Youth League has consistently marked the date with empowerment initiatives and freedom walks to celebrate resilience and political progress in the state.

“Despite all odds, Governor Dapo Abiodun emerged victorious in 2019 and again in 2023. This solidarity walk was solely to appreciate the exceptional performances of the president and the governor and reaffirm our loyalty.

“For leaders who have done so much, Ogun youths must show genuine love and unwavering support. We will continue to mobilise, educate and sensitise our members on the achievements of the incumbent administrations. The confidence displayed during the walk was rooted in performance,” Lawal added.

Youths under the auspices of the APC Youth League had on Wednesday walked through major streets in Ijebu Ode with banners bearing various inscriptions to show support and solidarity with President Tinubu and Governor Abiodun.

The Commissioner for Finance and Chief Economic Adviser to the Ogun State Government, Dapo Okubadejo, addressed the gathering at the Awujale Pavilion and described the young people of Ogun as drivers of prosperity under Governor Dapo Abiodun’s leadership.

Speaking to his paper titled “From Policy to Prosperity: Youth-centred Economic Pathway under Dapo Abiodun Administration”, Okubadejo, who was represented by the government liaison officer in Ijebu Ode Local Government, Olatokunbo Tosin, emphasised that “the administration’s development philosophy, the I.S.E.Y.A. Agenda, places inclusiveness, sustainability, education, youth empowerment, and agriculture at the core of governance ”.

“Policies do not change lives. Outcomes do. Budgets do not empower people. Impact does,” the commissioner added, highlighting the Governor Abiodun-led administration’s focus on delivering results.

He noted that the government has invested in youth empowerment as a deliberate economic strategy, recognising that equipping young people with skills, capital and opportunities is key to productivity, social stability and long-term growth.

Okubadejo, however, charged the youths to own the future being prepared for them.

Also speaking, the Ogun State Coordinator of the APC Youth League, Yunus Fayomi, said the exercise was aimed at reaffirming the commitment of Ogun youths to the party’s leadership at both state and federal levels.
