The head teacher of Greensprings Schools, Lagos, Feyi Ojugo, and the chairperson of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Iyen Ekong, have said the promotion of sporting activities in the school was to ensure the students were strong physically and emotionally and translate it into good academic performance.
Ojugo and Ekong stated this at the 2023 Sports Day of Greensprings School, which attracted parents, other schools and guests, with the theme “Inspired Through Sports.”
Ojugo explained that sports push students to do better in academic performance, adding, “We continue to expose our students” to sports.
She said the school would continue to promote inclusive academics and sports as well as give equal opportunity to students to hone their skills and improve their physical fitness.
“Sport has a firm place in our curriculum because of its immense benefits to the overall development of the students, which includes physical and social development, contributing to academic success and helping to nurture a child’s self-esteem,’’ she added.
The head teacher revealed that the school is doing well in sports and said two of Greenspings students were invited to the under-the-17-football camp and one made it to the final camp.
The PTA chairperson, Ekong said sports and academics could not be separate because both boost students’ confidence and physical condition.
She disclosed that the parents of Greensprings are supportive of academic and sports activities in the school, noting, “We can not separate teachers and parents, both are helpful to the students.”
She said the importance of sports as a constituent of students’ full development cannot be overemphasized, stressing that the event goes beyond improving the physical wellness of each individual and posing invaluable mental health benefits for those involved.
In her speech, the Executive Director of Greensprings Schools, Lai Koiki, said sports instill many important life lessons such as discipline, focus, dedication, headwork, commitment, perseverance, teamwork, and other values such as honesty and responsibility for themselves and others.
“Students that embrace sports early in life are often agile and fit, which in turn improves the cognitive and memory functions of the brain while helping them perform better in their studies. It is therefore an important part of the education we offer as a school,” Koiki noted.
At the end of the competition, Enahoro House came first with 34 gold, 16 silver, and 24 bronze, followed by Moremi House with 22 gold, 28 silver and 21 bronze, Queen Amina House placed 3rd with 20 gold, 16 silver and 14 bronze medals, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa House came 4th with 16 gold, 29 silver and 18 bronze, Nnamdi Azikiwe placed 5th with 14 gold, 10 silver and 14 bronze medals and Jaja House came 6th with 11 gold, 14 silver and 13 bronze.
