Why govs should hands off LG funds -Group

From Stanley Uzoaru, Owerri

A local rights group, Citizens Centre for Integrated Development and Social Rights (CCIDESOR), has called on state governments to allow local governments (LGs) receive and manage their funds directly.

Speaking at a seminar in Owerri, CCIDESOR’s Executive Director, Dr. Emeka Ononamadu, argued that centralised control undermines democracy as local needs are best understood at the local level.

He stated that direct funding improves efficiency and responsiveness, and urged state governments to support capacity building and respect LGAs’ independence.

Ononamadu said implementing the reforms can unlock grassroots development, reduce corruption, and

improve the quality of life for millions of Nigerians.

The seminar’s theme was “Local Government Autonomy and Improved Accountability: A pathway to rural development, economic growth, and democratic deepening in Nigeria.”
