The Oodua Youth Parliament (OYP) has explained why the appointment of General Christopher Gwabin Musa as Minister of Defence is a timely and correct decision capable of significantly curbing Nigeria’s lingering security challenges.
Briefing a cross-section of journalists on Sunday, the Speaker of the youth body, Hon. Aare Abdulmajeed Oladimeji Oyeniyi, said the early days of General Musa in office have already shown encouraging signs of a more focused, decisive and coordinated national security approach since his assumption of office in early December 2025.
According to the OYP, General Musa’s leadership has injected renewed momentum and strategic clarity into Nigeria’s defence architecture, leading to improved synergy among security agencies at a critical period for the country.
The Parliament noted that one of the clearest indications that his appointment was well-considered is the firmer posture now being adopted against armed criminal groups. It said the Defence Ministry has moved away from what it described as “ambiguous engagement” with bandit networks, replacing it with a clear reassertion of state authority over all armed non-state actors.
The youth parliament also pointed to improved operational responsiveness by security agencies under the new defence leadership. It cited intelligence-driven operations that resulted in the rescue of kidnapped civilians in parts of Taraba State, as well as the swift containment of security incidents in Plateau State through quicker deployment and enhanced inter-agency coordination.
In addition, the OYP observed increased regional and border awareness, describing the approach as proactive and critical to tracking transnational threats while reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a stabilising force within the West African sub-region.

“These early gains, though still evolving, demonstrate renewed seriousness and strategic clarity within the Ministry of Defence,” Oyeniyi said, adding that clearer doctrine, stronger command coordination and faster response tempo were becoming evident across the security space.
While commending the progress recorded so far, the Parliament stressed that sustained reforms are necessary to consolidate the gains and deliver long-term peace and stability.
It identified key areas requiring continuous attention, including improved intelligence fusion and community trust-building, especially in rural and conflict-prone communities; stronger justice and accountability mechanisms to ensure arrests are followed by prosecutions; enhanced troop welfare, logistics and morale; and expanded civil–military engagement in violence-affected areas.
The OYP further underscored the importance of responsible strategic communication to build public confidence and counter misinformation that could undermine security efforts.
“Security reform is a continuous process. Consolidating early successes requires institutional discipline, transparency and sustained engagement with the Nigerian people,” the Parliament stated.
Reaffirming its confidence in General Musa’s leadership, the Oodua Youth Parliament pledged its support to the Ministry of Defence in advancing national security reforms, expressing optimism that consistency, inclusiveness and sustained political will would translate the early progress into lasting peace and stability across Nigeria.
