The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Thursday explained why its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) temporarily became unavailable, blaming the disruption on technical challenges associated with the platform’s hosting arrangements.
The disruption occurred at a critical period of the admission exercise, with tertiary institutions across the country actively processing admissions and candidates awaiting decisions on their applications.
In a statement by its Acting Director, Public Affairs and Protocols, Fabian Benjamin, JAMB said the technical challenge commenced earlier in the day and affected institutions, candidates and other users of CAPS.
The Board said it immediately commenced intensive engagement with the hosting organisation to identify and resolve the problem.
JAMB described CAPS as the central platform through which admissions into tertiary institutions across the country are processed, stressing that the timing of the disruption was particularly significant because of the ongoing admission exercise.
“At this peak period of the admission exercise, institutions are actively processing admissions, candidates are anxiously awaiting the outcome of admission decisions, and several stakeholders are simultaneously interfacing with the platform,” the Board said.
JAMB said it considered it important to promptly explain the development to the public in line with its commitment to transparency and accountability.
The Board said the explanation was necessary to prevent candidates, institutions and other stakeholders from speculating about the cause of the disruption while efforts were being made to restore the system.
It assured users that it was working round the clock with the hosting organisation to restore CAPS to full functionality within the shortest possible time.
The Board also apologised for the inconvenience caused by the temporary disruption and appealed to candidates, institutions, and other stakeholders for patience and understanding.
JAMB further disclosed that it would review the circumstances surrounding the incident after the platform is restored, with a view to putting measures in place to prevent a recurrence.
The Board said further updates would be provided as efforts to restore the platform progressed.
