Singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P of the defunct P-Square duo, has defended his decision to have his children speak French, insisting that parents should be free to decide how they raise their children without interference from the public.
The controversy began after the singer shared a post on X from Paris, where he expressed admiration for how fluently his children speak French.
“Still in Paris! Watching my kids speak French so effortlessly makes me think… maybe it’s time to own a crib here in Paris. Just a thought,” he wrote.
His post sparked debate after an X user asked whether his children could also speak Igbo.
Responding, Mr P questioned the practical value of speaking indigenous Nigerian languages.
“And who naija language help? Make I hear word abeg,” he wrote.
The remark divided social media users, with some arguing that teaching children indigenous languages is important for preserving culture and identity, while others defended his right to make parenting decisions for his family.
As criticism mounted, the singer maintained that language choices are a private family matter.
“When it’s your turn, teach your own kids all the languages in Nigeria if that’s your choice,” he said.
Mr P later urged critics to mind their own business, stressing that his family’s decisions should not be a public concern.

The singer further argued that English remains Nigeria’s official language and suggested that many of his critics would choose to raise their own children abroad if given the opportunity.

“Focus on the real issues and let people raise their families the way they choose. Ndi ala.” he said.
