White Tigers Football Club successfully defended their crown at the Spires 5-Aside Naija Street Soccer Lagos Island Divisional Championship, defeating Greater Tomorrow FC 5-2 in a thrilling final held on Saturday at the Ikoyi Recreational Park.
The victory marked a remarkable third consecutive divisional title for the Emmanuel Olom-coached side, further cementing their dominance in the competition.
The tournament finale attracted an electrifying atmosphere as football enthusiasts witnessed high-quality street soccer action. In the third-place playoff, Alphas Football Club edged Dolphin FC 3-2 in a penalty shootout after regulation time ended 3-3 in a pulsating encounter.
Speaking after the tournament, the initiator of the competition, Dr. Bankole Allibay, expressed satisfaction with the success of the Lagos Island divisional championship and outlined ambitious plans for the future of the tournament.
“It’s exciting to note that we have redefined 5-Aside football in the West African sub-region. Our projection is to make this tournament the most commercially viable not only in Nigeria but across the continent,” Allibay said.
He added that preparations are already underway for the state championship and other events lined up under the competition’s umbrella, including the Sports Meet-Tech initiative aimed at equipping players with skills and opportunities beyond football.
“The Spires 5-Aside is not just a football tournament but a deliberate platform for empowering young people and connecting them to greater opportunities,” he said.
For their triumph, White Tigers received a cash prize of N500,000, while runners-up Greater Tomorrow FC earned N300,000. Third-placed Alphas FC went home with N100,000.
White Tigers’ Ajo Azeez emerged as the tournament’s top scorer and received a N50,000 award after netting six goals in three matches.
White Tigers FC, Greater Tomorrow FC and Alphas FC have all secured qualification to represent Lagos Island at the Spires 5-Aside State Championship scheduled for November 2026.
Following successful divisional championships in Ikorodu, Epe and Lagos Island, the tournament will continue its statewide tour with upcoming competitions in Ikeja and Badagry in the coming weeks.
