From Molly Kilete, Abuja

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), Friday said it is working with relevant Federal Government agencies to stop the use of drones by terrorists and other criminal groups to carry out attacks.

Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, who made this known, also said that the military is working with relevant government agencies to identify the sources of the drones used by these criminals with a view to stopping their deployment.

Gen. Onoja said this at a media briefing on updates of military operations conducted across the country in the last one month.

The DMO spokesman who was responding to questions from journalists over the use of drones by terrorists which has become incessant especially in the North-East part of the country, assured that the issue will soon becomes a thing of the past as in a matter of days.

He said “We have reached an advanced stage in taking measures, in conjunction with other Federal Government agencies, to trace where these drones are coming from. I believe that in the next couple of days or months, concrete action will emerge on what we intend to do.”

Gen. Onoja, while noting that agencies tasked with the responsibility to prevent illegal use of drones have commenced work, said: “The agencies that have capacity to prevent the use of drones have been contacted and we believe that action will be taken very soon on that.”

He also responded to allegations circulating on social media where soldiers at checkpoints in Bauchi State were being compelled to remit weekly sums to their commanders, stating that the claims remained allegations until proven.

He, however, pointed out that the military, as a transparent and responsible organisation would carry out its investigation to ascertain the accuracy or otherwise of the report.
