Lawmaker representing Osun Central and spokesperson of the Senate, Ajibola Basiru, yesterday, said agitation of northerners for state police has necessitated the re-introduction of the bill.
He stated this in Osogbo, Osun State while presenting his scorecard for the last three years to his constituents.
Basiru, who presented a 30-minutes documentary on his achievements, said he has sponsored some bills, including a bill on state police but the bill failed the test of the committee on constitutional review.
He said the recent call for state police by northern governors and stakeholders shows the bill needs to be reintroduced.
“I have sponsored so many bills. One of the bills is the bill on state police but, unfortunately, the bill was not allowed to see the light of the day at the review committee. Happily enough, about four days ago, northern governors and stakeholders have said they are for state police. So, I believe we are going to reintroduce the bill, then with the new knowledge and reality that we need state police.
“I also introduced the Federal Medical Centre, Osogbo bill which has been passed by the Senate and has been transmitted to the House of Representatives for concurrence.
“Also, a bill about the separation of the electoral management body and political party regulation. Another bill is about the centralisation of the Nigerian Police along zonal lines,” he said.
Governor Adegboyega Oyetola commended the senator for his good representation, saying he has made the state proud.
Represented by Commissioner for Political Affairs, Taiwo Akeju, Oyetola said Basiru was made the spokesperson of the Senate because of his brilliance despite being a first-timer.
He urged the people of Osun Central to support him and ensure his re-election to enable him continue his good representation.
