We ‘ll support Army to tackle security challenges – Reps

House of Representatives has said it would ensure that the Nigerian Army is
“placed on a proper pedestal” to tackle the security challenges confront the country.

The chairman, House Committee on Army, Abdullahi Mamudu, stated this, on Tuesday, at the inaugural meeting of the Committee. Mamudu explained has developed a four-year work plan that will enable it achieve its objective.

The lawmaker, who stated that the Committee has a responsibility to the citizens, charged members to give their maximum support to enable the parliament achieve its objective as regards the Nigerian Army.

According to him, “Let us take this responsibility with all seriousness and know that it is our duty to put the Nigerian Army on a proper pedestal to be able to end the several challenges we have been having in terms of insecurity in the country.

“The Legislature is the only institution that distinguishes democracy from other forms of government. In most democracies, the Military and the Parliaments have been working together, that is what we also hope to achieve.

“The House Committee on Army is one the Standing Committees of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly by virtue of the power conferred in Section 62 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended and Order XVIII B Rule 131, Ninth Edition, Standing Order of the House of Representatives, 2016.”

Similarly, the House Committee on Police Affairs, at its inaugural meeting, on Tuesday, charged its members to come up with legislations that will help the police to address the insecurity in the country.

The chairman of the Committee, Makki Yalleman, who gave the charge, said the members have been entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing key issues relating to policing and law enforcement.

Yalleman said “Let me remind you that the leadership of the committee will dwell more on your wealth of experience, expertise, hard work and dedication in order to discharge its functions.

“We are to ensure adequate funding for agencies under our jurisdiction, provide useful legislation, carrying out performance audit and other allied oversight functions geared towards efficient service delivery and repositioning the Nations internal security architecture

“Stewardship of our national security portfolio is an immense responsibility that requires diligence, vision and sacrifice. ”
