It will now be a Titanic battle of the strikers in the Super Eagles after Cyriel Dessers will not be called up for next month’s must-win 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin.
A top official told SCORENigeria that the new Panathinaikos signing failed to take his chance in World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa this month and this has opened the way for at least three strikers to be called up in his place. “Dessers is out, he did not convince the coach and now we have a massive fight between Terem Moffi, Jerome Akor and Sadiq Umar to be named in his place,” the official said.
“Tolu Arokodare has done well for Wolves thus far and so he is assured of his squad place.
“The coach wants an extra striker besides him and Victor Osimhen because the team need to score goals in both matches next month.”
Dessers shone at the Unity Cup in London in May, but flopped his lines in the World Cup qualifiers, while Moffi has been scoring goals for his French club since he returned from the ACL injury that cost him last season.
Akor, who was named on a provisional squad for the last round of the World Cup qualifiers has recovered from a muscle injury, and Sadiq Umar is now playing again for Real Sociedad after a transfer away from the Spanish club did not go through.
