The Ebonyi Government says it will soon embark on the distribution of free cellophane bags to 5,000 households as part of its waste management strategies.

The Commissioner for Environment, Grant and Donor Agency, Dr Richard Nnabu, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki.

Nnabu said that the intention was to reawaken the consciousness of residents toward effective waste disposal.
He further said that the initiative was to sensitise the public on the need for a clean and healthy environment.
He urged the residents to support the initiative to ensure proper refuse evacuation and management.
“The essence of the waste bags is to sensitise the people and encourage them on bagging of waste to avoid possible epidemic.
“We are expecting to reach out to 5,000 households with the bags.
“Health is wealth and health is anchored on environment.
“If your environment is not safe, your health is not guaranteed.
“If our environment is clean, our health is guaranteed,” the commissioner further said.
He said that the state would resume the state-wide sanitation exercise on Saturday, after some years.
He commended Gov. David Umahi for adopting and funding the waste bag distribution initiative. (NAN)
