As Nigeria battle South Africa for 2027 World Cup qualification

Nigeria, 10-time WAFCON champion, has been knocked out of the 2026 tournament in Morocco after the Cameroon Indomitable Lionesses won by a single goal.

This marked their second victory over Nigeria in 40 encounters. Michaely Bihina led Cameroon to this notable victory following Maeva Nyadjou’s early free-kick that secured the only goal in the quarter-final at Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday.

The Super Falcons responded strongly after falling behind, pushing forward to seek an equaliser. Despite creating several chances, Nigeria was thwarted by solid goalkeeping and a resilient Cameroon defence. Cameroon maintained their organisation and discipline at the back, limiting Nigeria’s opportunities for an equaliser.

World Cup qualification remains possible, as Nigeria will face South Africa in the inter-confederation playoffs on Thursday. Meanwhile, Cameroon will face host Morocco in the semi-finals on Wednesday, vying for a spot in the WAFCON final.
