…commence disciplinary action
The Lagos State Police Command said it has commenced disciplinary action against an Inspector, Osumah Frank, over controversial remarks he made in a public vehicle.
Command spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi disclosed this in a Friday statement.
The police inspector had gone viral on social media after he was recorded making some controversial ethno-political comments.
While decked in his police uniform, Frank was heard making remarks about Igbo people and dissecting the political ambitions of 2027 presidential candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi.
He also made comments about President Bola Tinubu and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
He suggested that police officers could be enticed with money to scuttle a political candidate’s electoral chances.
However, the command described the remarks as “careless, inappropriate and uncultured”.
It said the inspector spoke in his personal capacity and his views should not be misconstrued as the official disposition of the command or the Nigeria Police Force as a whole.
The statement reads, “In keeping with the Lagos State Police Command’s commitment to transparency and accountability, the Command wishes to state that the Inspector of Police who appeared in the viral video making careless, inappropriate and uncultured remarks while travelling in public transport has been identified as INSP. Osumah Frank.
“The Command has commenced appropriate disciplinary action against the officer in line with established regulations of the Nigeria Police Force; it also wishes to make it clear that the statements made by the officer were made in his personal capacity and do not represent the position, views or official disposition of the Lagos State Police Command or the Nigeria Police Force.”
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, reiterated that all personnel were expected to maintain professionalism, civility, discipline and respect for members of the public at all times.
He further reaffirmed that wearing the police uniform comes with a responsibility to uphold the dignity and integrity of the force, and that the command would not condone any conduct capable of bringing the force into disrepute or undermining public confidence in the police.
“The command remains committed to transparency, accountability and policing with humility and integrity,” the statement further reads.
