Viral video: Indian, two security operatives arrested for assaulting truck drivers in Ibadan

Harjit Singh, Indian arrested for assault in Ibadan

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested three suspects, including an Indian national, 46-year-old Harjit Singh, in connection with a viral video showing the assault of two truck drivers at Karma Agric Feeds and Foods Limited, located at Kilometre 12, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ibadan.

Also arrested were two security operatives, Oluwadamilare Olowu and Olamide Sodeke, attached to the company.

In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Olayinka Ayanlade said the command’s attention was drawn to the video at about 8:30am on Tuesday, prompting the Commissioner of Police, CP Ayodeji Olugbenga Abimbola, to direct detectives to identify and apprehend all persons involved.

Ayanlade said preliminary findings indicated that the confrontation stemmed from a disagreement over the parking of a truck that had delivered goods to the company on Saturday.

According to the truck owner, Sarafa Akinpelu, 47, the driver objected to a designated parking spot over concerns that it could damage the truck’s tyres.

He was reportedly compelled to park there, and one of the tyres subsequently burst.

The disagreement reportedly intensified when the driver requested a replacement tyre, but the company declined.

In response, the driver allegedly used his truck to block the company’s entrance, triggering a physical confrontation involving the drivers, security operatives and the Indian national.

The police identified the two victims as Ridwan Olajide, 34, and Taiwo Yinusa, 37.

Both were admitted to a hospital in the Academy area of Ibadan for medical attention.

Ayanlade said the Investigating Police Officer visited them at the hospital and obtained their statements.

Following police intervention, three suspects were arrested: Oluwadamilare Olowu and Olamide Sodeke, both security operatives attached to the company, and Harjit Singh, 46, an Indian national associated with the company.

The command said investigations are ongoing to establish their respective roles and determine culpability, adding that the case has been transferred to the Special Enquiry Bureau, Eleyele, Ibadan, for further investigation.

The command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that the law applies equally to all individuals and organisations, urging members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed.
