Nigerian football has been hit by tragedy following the death of former Southampton and Royal Antwerp forward Victor Udoh, who died at the age of 21.

Reports said the young striker was found dead in Abuja, with the circumstances surrounding his death still unclear. Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the cause of death.

Udoh had recently returned to Nigeria after concluding his stint with Czech club Dynamo České Budějovice, where he continued his career after leaving Southampton in 2025.

The promising attacker joined Southampton on a three-and-a-half-year contract amid strong expectations, but his spell at the English club was brief. He spent seven months with the Saints without making a senior appearance before leaving by mutual consent in search of regular game time.

Before moving to England, Udoh made his mark at Belgian club Royal Antwerp after arriving from Abuja-based academy Hypebuzz.

He quickly rose through the ranks and impressed at reserve level, scoring 12 goals in 21 appearances. His performances earned him opportunities with Antwerp’s senior side, where he went on to make 28 appearances.

Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s emerging football prospects, Udoh’s career had shown signs of steady growth across Europe before his untimely death.

His passing has sparked grief among football followers, with many awaiting more details on the circumstances surrounding the 21-year-old’s death. Further information is expected as investigations continue.
