With a 1-0 victory over Sunderland on Wednesday, defender Virgil van Dijk put Liverpool back in the race to earn a spot in the Champions League.

Sunderland suffered their first Premier League home loss of the season thanks to a goal from Reds skipper Van Dijk in the second half.

With their second victory in their past eight league games, sixth-place Liverpool closed the gap to three points behind fourth-place Manchester United and two points ahead of fifth-place Chelsea.

Liverpool’s stuttering attempt to qualify for Europe’s top club competition was given a boost by Tuesday’s draws with United and Chelsea, and they took advantage of the opportunity with a gruelling victory on rain-soaked Wearside.

Following Liverpool’s 2-1 home loss to Manchester City last weekend, manager Arne Slot acknowledged that this season has been the hardest in his career “by a mile.”

Less than a year after leading Liverpool to the English championship, Slot has faced rumours over his future.

He acknowledged that Liverpool must be “close to perfection” in order to earn a spot in the Champions League, and that it would be unacceptable if they did not make it.
