The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced plans to establish a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) centre in Ottawa, Canada, from 2027.
The proposed centre will allow eligible Nigerians living in Canada and other parts of North America to sit for the UTME without travelling to Nigeria solely for the examination.
JAMB disclosed the plan following a visit by its Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, to the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa.
The board said the initiative was part of its efforts towards “taking Nigerian tertiary education to the world” and making the examination more accessible to Nigerians in the diaspora.
“The proposed centre will make it easier for Nigerians in the diaspora to sit for the UTME without travelling to Nigeria solely for the examination,” JAMB said.
The board said the Ottawa centre would also strengthen the relationship between Nigerians abroad and Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
According to JAMB, the initiative would create “greater opportunities to showcase Nigerian tertiary education internationally” while reducing barriers for Nigerians seeking admission into Nigerian universities and other tertiary institutions.
“For Nigerians in Canada, the UTME is coming closer to home,” the board said.
JAMB added that it was “working towards establishing a UTME examination centre in Ottawa, Canada, expected to commence operations in 2027.”
The board described the proposed centre as “a bigger opportunity to strengthen the connection between Nigerians in the diaspora and Nigerian tertiary education”.
It said the centre would provide more access to the UTME for eligible Nigerians across North America and make it easier for those seeking to pursue tertiary education in Nigeria.
The planned Ottawa centre will therefore expand JAMB’s examination access beyond Nigeria and give Nigerians living in Canada a new option for participating in the admission process from 2027.
