The United States Government has commended the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) for its high level of preparedness ahead of the delivery of the AH-1Z attack helicopters, citing the readiness of designated facilities where the aircraft will be stationed.
The commendation was delivered during a three-day high-level engagement between a United States Government delegation from PMA-276, led by Robert Galan, and senior NAF officials at the Headquarters Nigerian Air Force in Abuja.
The discussions focused on the comprehensive Programme and Support Plan designed to ensure seamless integration, sustainment and operational effectiveness of the incoming AH-1Z fleet.
Representing the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, at the engagement was the Chief of Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Abdullahi. He reaffirmed the Service’s unwavering commitment to aligning all operational, technical and logistical requirements to guarantee immediate operational readiness upon delivery of the aircraft.
According to him, the Nigerian Air Force has taken deliberate steps to ensure that infrastructure, manpower training, maintenance frameworks and logistics systems are fully optimised ahead of the helicopters’ arrival.

The engagement further underscores the steady advancement of defence cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, anchored on mutual trust, shared security objectives and institutional professionalism.
The US delegation’s commendation reflects growing international recognition of the Nigerian Air Force’s meticulous planning, strategic foresight and disciplined modernisation drive under the leadership of the Chief of the Air Staff.
Defence observers note that beyond the acquisition of new platforms, the collaboration strengthens Nigeria’s airpower capability and reinforces the country’s national security architecture.
The arrival of the AH-1Z helicopters is expected to significantly enhance the Nigerian Air Force’s operational effectiveness in addressing evolving security challenges across the country, while contributing to broader national stability and sustainable development.
The Bell AH-1Z Viper is a, twin-engine, four-bladed attack helicopter primarily operated by the US Marine Corps for close air support, armed reconnaissance, and escort missions. It features advanced avionics, a 20mm Gatling gun, Hellfire missiles, and is the only attack helicopter with fully integrated AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air capability.
The AH-1Z is designed for littoral (maritime) environments and can operate from ships or austere land bases, playing a crucial role in ship-to-shore operations. It replaced the AH-1W Super Cobra as the premier attack helicopter for the USMC
