From Aidoghie Paulinus, Abuja
The United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, Leonardo Santos Simão, is to hold high-level consultations with the Federal Government, political parties, presidential candidates, electoral authorities and other stakeholders as part of efforts to promote peaceful, credible and transparent elections in Nigeria in 2027.
The United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), which disclosed this in a statement made available to Daily Sun, said Simão’s visit, scheduled for November 1 to 7, 2026, forms part of the UN’s ongoing engagement with national stakeholders during the pre-election period.
According to UNOWAS, the mission will provide an opportunity to assess preparations for the elections and engage relevant institutions on measures to promote peaceful, credible, inclusive and transparent electoral processes.
“During the mission, Mr. Simão is expected to engage with the leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and hold consultations with a broad range of stakeholders,” the statement said.
Those expected to participate in the consultations include representatives of the Federal Government, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, political parties, presidential candidates, security institutions, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and National Peace Committee (NPC).
Others are members of the diplomatic community, United Nations Country Team (UNCT) and civil society organisations.
“The visit underscores the United Nations’ continued support for Nigeria’s democratic processes, peaceful dialogue, and regional stability in West Africa and the Sahel,” UNOWAS stated.
