The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has scheduled a community engagement aimed at combating sexual harassment for June 27-28.
The initiative is in collaboration with the University of Pretoria and Michigan State University. Ikechukwu Erojikwe, the Creative Director of Campus-Campaign Against Sexual Harassment (C-CASH) announced the event, which will begin on June 27 with pre-registration activities and edutainment at 5:00 PM.
According to him, the session will merge education and entertainment to create impactful social change, leveraging edutainment to raise awareness and drive behavioral change among young people.
On June 28, the main events will start with a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of UNN at 11:00 AM, emphasizing the university’s dedication to addressing sexual harassment. Activities will then move to the Princess Alexandra Auditorium for a symposium, workshop, theatre performance, and exhibition from 12:00 noon onwards.
Dr. Ejike Oji, President and CEO of the Community Development Foundation, will deliver the keynote address. With over 30 years of experience, Dr. Oji will offer valuable insights and actionable steps towards creating safer educational environments. The event will feature a diverse lineup of speakers, including Dorothy Njemanze, Dr. Ken Ugwu, representatives from the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) and the Mirabel Centre, and Fr. Emma Asogwa.
The event aims to highlight the dangers faced by students in tertiary institutions and foster discussions to reduce sexual harassment. Workshops will focus on practical prevention, reporting, and support strategies, emphasizing respect and accountability.
A theatre performance will use storytelling and drama to depict the realities and impacts of sexual harassment, engaging the audience emotionally and intellectually. An accompanying exhibition will showcase initiatives and resources related to combating sexual harassment.
