The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Professor Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, has formally taken over the mantle of leadership of the university as its 7th substantive VC with an assurance of running a student-centred administration where staff and students’ welfare and the overall interests of the university community will be topmost priorities.

Professor Anyaehie took over from Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, erstwhile Acting Vice-Chancellor, in a brief ceremony at the Vice-Chancellor’s office on Tuesday, 18 November 2025.

Speaking after the handover, Professor Anyaehie expressed appreciation to God as the source of his strength and referenced Him as the One who, through His grace, found him worthy through the Governing Council members to be appointed as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of the great institution named after the Zik of Africa.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that his administration would be open to all and welcomed collective ideas to move the university forward. He called for collaboration from critical stakeholders and assured of his readiness to work with all stakeholders to actualise the vision and mission of the institution and achieve excellence.

In a post-handover interaction with the media, Professor Anyaehie affirmed that his administration’s priority centres on the welfare of students and staff, stating that students are the main reason people were employed.

“My administration will be student-centred. Student and staff welfare will be a top priority under my leadership. Students would be better engaged academically and in sports to ensure that cultism and related activities are drastically curtailed.

“Graduates of the university in my tenure would earn three certifications upon completion of their programmes – it is part of efforts to make UNIZIK students more competitive nationally and globally.

“The journey at hand is enormous but we are prepared for the job and we need the cooperation of everybody. Basically why we are here is to make things much better but we cannot do much without peace. I came into a battlefield and the first thing we have to do like my name says is to ‘bond’ them so we all can work with a united purpose,” he stated.

The handover ceremony was witnessed by principal officers of the university, including Dr Chinenye Gloria Okeke, Registrar; Mr Gozie Egwuatu, Bursar; Professor Stella Anasi, University Librarian; immediate past Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor F. J. Odibo; immediate past Registrar, Barr. Philomena Okoye; immediate past Acting Registrar, Mr Victor Modebelu; Director, General Studies, Professor Philomena Igbokwe; Mr Njelita Louis, Acting Director, Information and Public Relations; union leaders; among others.
