• UI ranks 1,291st globally as 10 Nigerian universities make global top 2,203
University of Ibadan (UI) has emerged as Nigeria’s best-performing university in the July 2026 edition of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, placing 1,291st globally and ahead of all other Nigerian institutions assessed in the latest ranking.
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) followed in second place nationally, ranking 1,355th in the world, while the University of Nigeria (UNN) came third in Nigeria and 1,397th globally.
The ranking, which assessed 32,148 universities and higher education institutions worldwide, measures institutions largely by their digital visibility, openness and research excellence, highlighting the growing importance of online accessibility and scholarly impact in global university competitiveness.
Covenant University, Ota, ranked fourth in Nigeria and 1,522nd globally, while Landmark University occupied fifth position nationally and 1,659th worldwide.
The University of Ilorin ranked sixth in Nigeria at 1,883rd globally, followed by Obafemi Awolowo University in seventh place at 1,986th.
Ahmadu Bello University ranked eighth nationally and 2,068th globally, while the University of Port Harcourt and Federal University of Technology, Akure, completed Nigeria’s top 10 at 2,077th and 2,203rd respectively.
Nigeria’s top 10 universities were led by the University of Ibadan, which ranked 1,291st globally, followed by the University of Lagos at 1,355th, the University of Nigeria at 1,397th, Covenant University, Ota at 1,522nd, Landmark University at 1,659th, the University of Ilorin at 1,883rd, Obafemi Awolowo University at 1,986th, Ahmadu Bello University at 2,068th, the University of Port Harcourt at 2,077th, and the Federal University of Technology, Akure, which ranked 2,203rd globally.

The Webometrics ranking, published twice yearly, focuses on the digital footprint and scholarly visibility of higher education institutions. Its indicators include visibility, openness and excellence, reflecting the accessibility of institutional information and scholarly resources, as well as research impact.
The ranking therefore goes beyond traditional measures of academic reputation and places significant emphasis on how effectively universities make their research, knowledge and academic resources accessible to the global community.
At the global level, Harvard University retained the number one position, followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The University of Oxford ranked fourth, while the University of Washington completed the global top five.
Cornell University, the University of Michigan, the University of California, Berkeley, Johns Hopkins University and Columbia University occupied the remaining spots in the global top 10.
The United States dominated the elite group, accounting for seven of the 10 highest-ranked institutions, while the United Kingdom also maintained a strong presence. The University of Toronto was the highest-ranked Canadian institution, placing 12th globally.
Despite UI’s emergence as Nigeria’s leading institution in the latest edition, its 1,291st global position underscores the considerable gap between Nigeria’s strongest universities and the world’s leading institutions.
The ranking highlights the need for Nigerian universities to deepen investment in research, digital infrastructure, international collaboration, scholarly publishing and open access to academic resources if they are to improve their global standing.
For Nigerian universities, the latest results present both a recognition of progress and a reminder that achieving stronger global competitiveness will require sustained improvements in research quality, visibility and international academic engagement.
