The University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom has conferred an honorary doctorate on Nigerian businesswoman, philanthropist and minister, Apostle Folorunso Alakija, in recognition of her achievements in enterprise, philanthropy and nation-building.

The award was presented on Friday, October 16, 2026, at The Radcliffe Centre, University of Buckingham, during the institution’s Africa Day celebration. The ceremony was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Cole, and attended by university officials, family members, friends and well-wishers.

In recognising Alakija’s achievements, Cole said she embodied the values of success, service and leadership represented by the university, which is marking its 50th anniversary.

The Dean of the Faculty of Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Debarpita Bardhan-Correia, highlighted Alakija’s commitment to creating opportunities for others, describing it as one of the highest expressions of leadership.

She said the occasion celebrated not only an accomplished African woman but also the opportunities that emerge when Africa and the United Kingdom work together through education, enterprise and leadership.

Delivering the oration, Professor Shalom Lloyd MBE commended Alakija’s ability to bridge cultures, unite people, transform organisations and inspire a brighter future.

Emphasising the importance of investing in Africa’s next generation, Lloyd asked: “What better investment can we make than developing Africa’s future leaders?”

Accepting the honorary degree in the university’s red doctoral gown, Alakija expressed gratitude to Almighty God and thanked the university’s Council and Senate for the recognition. She said she was particularly honoured to receive the distinction during Buckingham Africa Day.

Speaking on Africa’s potential and the responsibility that comes with achievement, she said: “Africa is a continent of immense potential, creativity and resilience and that achievement carries responsibility to serve others.”

Alakija urged students and young people to pursue their calling with passion, perseverance and diligence, while embracing humility and excellence. She also encouraged them not to underestimate the value of their contributions.

Her message reflected her belief that success is most meaningful when it creates opportunities, inspires others and contributes to the greater good.

With a career spanning banking, fashion, oil and gas, real estate, printing, philanthropy and enterprise development, Alakija has built a profile that extends beyond business to include mentorship, service and opportunity creation.

Her journey continues to inspire women and girls in Nigeria and beyond, demonstrating the role of resilience, purpose and determination in achieving personal and professional goals.

Following the ceremony, the university hosted a reception in her honour, attended by alumni, students and members of the university community. Alakija also interacted with students and guests, offering advice and encouragement.

Those present included her son, Dele Alakija, and her sister, Arinola Ogbara, alongside friends, university representatives and other well-wishers. She expressed appreciation to the university and to family members and friends who travelled from Nigeria to celebrate the milestone.

The honorary doctorate adds to the recognition of Alakija’s work across multiple sectors and highlights her message to the next generation: pursue excellence, build with purpose and use achievement to uplift others.
