The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned universities and other tertiary institutions against issuing admission letters to candidates, insisting that only the board is legally empowered to issue official admission letters in Nigeria.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, gave the warning when he received a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, during a courtesy visit to his office.
Aina said the board was the only body authorised by law to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across the country.
He expressed concern that candidates often believed admission letters issued by institutions were genuine, even when the documents did not meet the board’s requirements.
The registrar urged institutions involved in the practice to stop immediately, stressing that they also had a responsibility to ensure candidates obtained the appropriate admission documents from JAMB.
He recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had directed that all admissions be processed through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), warning that admissions conducted outside the approved platform were illegal and invalid.
According to him, institutions are not permitted to substitute their own letters for the official JAMB admission letter issued after a candidate has accepted an offer of admission through CAPS.
Aina added that only admissions recognised through the platform would be accepted for purposes such as mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The warning comes as JAMB reiterates the need for tertiary institutions to comply with the approved admission process and ensure that candidates receive valid documentation.
