UNIMED don gets IALP Exco appointment

Professor Wahab Owolawi has been appointed into the executive committee of International Association of Communication Sciences and Disorders Practitioners (IALP).

He is a lecturer in the department of Audiology and Speech Therapy at the university of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo.

As a member of the Committee, Owolawi will be facilitating audiological services in mid and low-income countries in Africa.

Reacting to the appointment, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Adesegun Fatusi said “this appointment shows what the university stands for excellence. Our members of staff excel locally and internationally.”

“This is therefore not surprising as Professor Wahab Owolawi is a seasoned scholar in audiology and speech therapy. I express my hearty congratulations to him and wish him all the best in the discharge of his duties as a member of the committee.”

According to the Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr Isaac Oluyi, the appointment takes immediate effect.

Oluyi stated that Prof. Owolawi’s major areas of focus are noise-induced hearing loss, early detection of hearing loss in children, ototoxicity and aural (re)habilitation.

“As a former faculty member at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa he made his mark as a member of the prestigious University’s research ethics committee,” he said.

He added that Prof. Owolawi equally served as a visiting professor and external examiner to the then Medical University of South Africa (Medunsa – now University of Limpopo, Medunsa campus), South Africa.

Prof. Owolawi was an internal supervisor to Ph.D students in a joint programme of University of Leeds, UK and King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

“He serves on the editorial board of many professionally related academic journals and has several academic publications to his credit,” he added.
