The Federal Government has announced international-standard postgraduate education partnership between the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, and the University of Lagos (UNILAG), with two joint degree programmes scheduled to commence in September 2027.

The programmes, comprising a Master of Science (MSc) in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Technologies, and a Master of Arts (MA) in Digital Media and Communications, are expected to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to develop skilled professionals for the digital economy.

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, said the initiative aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Federal Government’s efforts to improve education quality, promote global competitiveness and expand access to internationally recognised academic programmes.

According to a statement signed by Ikharo Attah, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the minister, the partnership represents a significant step towards strengthening Nigerian universities through international academic collaboration.

It disclosed that the initiative followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University of Birmingham and UNILAG on January 29, 2026.

The statement further indicated that the programmes were developed in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC) through a Transnational Education Unit based in Lagos.

However, the Minister said the partnership reinforced government’s determination to build a tertiary education system that responds to labour-market demands, strengthens institutional quality and positions Nigerian universities for greater international recognition.

He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to expanding strategic international education partnerships, strengthening quality assurance and delivering globally competitive learning opportunities within Nigeria.

He said the ultimate goal was to equip Nigerian students with relevant skills, nurture entrepreneurs and job creators, and build an education system capable of driving innovation, economic growth and sustainable national development.

Alausa described the initiative as a landmark development for the country’s education sector, noting that it would enable more Nigerian students to access world-class postgraduate education without travelling abroad.

“Today is a great day for Nigeria. We now have a country where we are daring to do big things. We have transnational education in action, with one of the world’s leading universities partnering with one of Nigeria’s best universities to bring international-standard education to our country. This is a first for Nigeria and the beginning of many more to come,” the minister said.

He explained that the partnership aligned with the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), particularly its Education Quality Assurance pillar, as well as the Federal Government’s Transnational Education Policy.

The minister said the collaboration would expand access to internationally developed programmes, strengthen local institutional capacity and improve the quality of postgraduate education in Nigeria.

He added that plans were underway to extend the partnership to undergraduate degree programmes in disciplines relevant to the labour market.

“The MSc in Artificial Intelligence and Data Technologies will cover machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, large language models, data management and AI ethics.

“The programme is expected to prepare graduates for opportunities in emerging technology fields, including artificial intelligence development, data analysis and digital innovation.

“Similarly, the MA in Digital Media and Communications will provide training in digital cultures, research methods, content creation, broadcasting and contemporary media practices, with potential career opportunities in journalism and the wider communications industry,” he explained.

Alausa said the programmes were deliberately selected to address emerging skills requirements in technology, innovation, entrepreneurship and digital communication.

He expressed confidence that the initiative would help produce graduates capable of creating businesses, generating employment and contributing to national development.

The Provost of the University of Birmingham, Professor Nick Vaughan-Williams, in his remarks, said the institution was proud to launch the programmes in partnership with UNILAG.

He noted that universities had an important role to play in preparing graduates for rapidly changing global economies through relevant skills development, entrepreneurship and expanded employment opportunities.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, described the collaboration as a major step towards internationalising Nigerian higher education through mutual respect, shared responsibility and the co-creation of knowledge.

She said the partnership would strengthen experiential learning, modernise curricula, improve the university’s global visibility and support research in emerging fields, particularly artificial intelligence and digital communications.

Also speaking, the British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, said the programmes demonstrated the strength of educational cooperation between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.

He noted that developing expertise in artificial intelligence, data science and digital communications would promote innovation, expand opportunities for young people and support sustainable economic growth.

The Country Director of the British Council Nigeria, Donna McGowan, also welcomed the initiative, describing transnational education as an important platform for knowledge exchange and skills development.

She said the partnership would make high-quality UK education more accessible to Nigerian students while helping develop the talent required to drive national growth and prosperity.
