Authorities of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) have summoned all students of the institution to a crucial meeting aimed at finding a lasting solution to the rising insecurity concerns in and around the campus.
The university has subsequently declared a lecture-free period for the meeting, scheduled to hold on Friday, July 31, to ensure full participation.
In an internal memorandum with reference number UJ/VC/55, dated July 29, 2026, and signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, sighted by our correspondent on Thursday, the meeting is scheduled to hold at the Faculty of Social Sciences Auditorium at 9:00 a.m.
According to Ishaya, the meeting became necessary following recent developments threatening the peace, security and smooth running of the university.
“In view of recent events that threaten the peace, security and good image of our University, I have approved the convening of a crucial meeting with all students of the University of Jos,” the memorandum stated.
Professor Ishaya said the meeting would focus on general security concerns within the university community, recent unhealthy activities involving students and measures to safeguard the well-being of all members of the institution.
“The primary objective of this meeting is to deliberate on general security concerns within the University community, recent unhealthy activities of students and to chart a collective course of action to safeguard the well-being of all members of the University community.”
To guarantee full attendance, the Vice-Chancellor directed all deans of faculties and heads of departments to suspend lectures between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on Friday.
“Considering the significance of the meeting, all Deans of Faculties and Heads of Departments are by this notice directed to declare a lecture-free period between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on the said date.”
“This will ensure that all students attend and participate in the meeting,” the directive read.
The university has experienced several security breaches for some time.
The latest directive comes after a mob allegedly killed a former student of the institution, Ibrahim Mbaya, over allegations of phone theft.
The development also follows the discovery of the beheaded body of a farmer on farmland within the institution’s permanent site a fortnight ago. The victim was later identified as a farmer known to operate in the area.
