Authorities of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) have summoned all students to a crucial meeting over rising insecurity in the school
To ensure compliance and full participation, the management declared a lecture-free period for the meeting scheduled to be held today, July 31.
The directive, contained in an internal memo with reference number UJ/VC/55, dated July 29 and signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Tanko Ishaya, said that scheduled meeting is to be held at the Faculty of Social Sciences auditorium by 9am.
The vice chancellor said the meeting had become necessary following recent developments, threatening the peace, security and smooth running of the university.
The statement said: “In view of recent events that threaten the peace, security and good image of our University, I have approved a crucial meeting with all students of the University of Jos.”
The meeting, the vice chancellor said, would focus on general security concerns within the university community, especially recent unhealthy activities involving students and map out measures to safeguard the security of all members of the institution.
“The primary objective of this meeting is to deliberate on general security concerns within the University community, recent unhealthy activities of students and to chart a collective course of action to safeguard the well-being of all members of the University community.”

Ishaya directed all the deans of faculties and heads of departments to suspend lectures between 9am and 12 noon today in order to ensure full attendance.
“Considering the significance of the meeting, all Deans of Faculties and Heads of Departments are by this notice directed to declare a lecture-free period between 9am and 12 noon on the said date. This will ensure that all students attend and participate in the meeting,” he said.
The directive came amid heightening insecurity within the university community.
Just last Sunday, a former student of the institution, Ibrahim Mbaya, was allegedly killed by a mob, who accused him of phone theft.
This came after another incident, a fortnight ago, when the body of a man was discovered on farmland within the institution’s permanent site.
It was later confirmed that the victim was neither a student nor a member of staff, but a farmer familiar with the environment.
Apart from these, there had been isolated incidents of attacks on students living off campus.
