The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has donated medical items including Acute Water Diarrhea kits and bed to Borno to contain spread of cholera following outbreak in the state.
UNICEF Deputy Representative in Nigeria, Dr. Rowan Khan, said the donation was a joint global effort by partners as response to the outbreak of cholera in Borno State.
“UNICEF is presenting 30 Acute Water Diarrhea (AWD) kits (90 units) and cholera kits valued at USD$69, 075 (N113,284, 213.60,” she disclosed.
She said the global eye has come to identify with the state and its people after the devastating flood which triggered the water-borne disease with 451 suspected cases.
Khan said the intervention is targeted to reach 500,000 people. She also said an additional 600,000 doses of cholera vaccine will be delivered to the state.
“This oral cholera vaccine that came was a joint effort between the government and the partner. So UNICEF is one of the partners.
“Commissioner of Health and Human Service, Prof Baba Mala Gana described UNICEF as a strong and reliable partner,” she explained.
Gana who was represented by a special adviser to the governor on health, Dr Abubakar Hassan said UNICEF and partners interventions have helped in ensuring zero fatality despite the cholera spike.
Cholera, a water-borne disease, is contagious. Medical experts advise proper hygiene, good sanitation and water supply are effective in containing its spread.
