The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has taken a significant step towards achieving energy self-sufficiency with the unveiling of an ultramodern filling station.

The state-of-the-art facility aims at providing affordable, reliable fuel to students, staff and the surrounding community while shoring up the finances of the university.

It is incorporated as Unical Petroleum and Gas Ltd and is a joint venture between the institution and DonCally Resources Limited.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar (Unical), Prof Florence Obi, who officially commissioned the facility, welcomed the partnership.

She described it as “a model of academia-industry collaboration that fuels both knowledge and progress,” and expressed gratitude to God for the station’s fruition despite initial challenges.

Prof Obi described the facility as an “ultra-modern fuelling station” and commended DonCally Resources Ltd for forging a strong partnership and bringing the project to life.

Managing Director of Unical Petroleum and Gas Ltd, Idongesit Eyibio, thanked the vice-chancellor and the university management for their support.

He said the facility boasts accurate meters with an installed storage capacity of 135,000 litres of PMS, 45,000 litres of diesel and 20,000 kg of gas.
