The Ukrainian Ambassador to Nigeria, Ivan Kholostenko, has expressed delight over the November 7, 2025 election of Ukraine to the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for 2025–2029.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Kholostenko said the important decision reflects international recognition of Ukraine’s active role in promoting global peace, sustainable development, mutual understanding, and international solidarity through education, science, and culture.
The Ukrainian envoy also said for Ukraine, the election carried profound significance, adding that despite the ongoing Russian aggression that has caused immense destruction to cultural heritage, schools, museums, universities, and educational institutions, Ukraine remained deeply committed to the ideals of UNESCO, protecting cultural identity, safeguarding freedom of expression, ensuring the safety of journalists, advancing science and education, and strengthening intercultural dialogue.

Kholostenko said: “Ukraine continues to demonstrate that even in times of war, it is possible to uphold the values of knowledge, human dignity, and cooperation.
“We also note that the Russian Federation has once again failed to secure a seat on the Executive Board. This outcome sends a clear message from the international community: an aggressor state that violates international law and destroys the cultural heritage of others has no place in a body dedicated to peace, education, and culture. This strengthens UNESCO’s authority and reaffirms its ability to act in line with its noble mandate.”
The Ukrainian envoy further said Ukraine is sincerely grateful to all UNESCO member states for their trust and support during the election.
He added that the election was a strong acknowledgment of Ukraine’s consistent efforts to defend human rights, equality, cultural diversity, and sustainable development — even under the most difficult circumstances.
