The United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres has strongly condemned rising xenophobic attacks in South Africa and urged authorities to take decisive action to protect foreign nationals across affected regions.

Through his spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, the UN chief expressed concern over incidents reported in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, where migrants have been targeted in violent and hostile attacks.

Guterres warned that such acts undermine the values of inclusion and democracy, insisting that violence and hate speech must not be allowed to take root in any society.

“Violence, vigilantism and all forms of incitement to hatred have no place in an inclusive, democratic society,” he said.

He also reminded South Africa of its history, noting that its liberation struggle was supported by international solidarity, including from other African nations, and stressed the contributions of migrants to its development.

While acknowledging the country’s economic and social pressures, he welcomed government efforts under the National Action Plan against Racism and Xenophobia.

Guterres further called for swift, independent, and transparent investigations into the attacks and extended Freedom Day greetings to South Africa, urging unity and restraint going forward.
