Umo Eno’s digital future for Akwa Ibom youth

By Ibas Emmanuel

In Akwa Ibom today, a quiet revolution is underway, one that does not roar with machines or tower cranes, but thrives softly in co-working spaces, digital classrooms, and innovation hubs. It is a revolution of minds, powered by vision, inclusion, and technology. And at the center of it stands Governor Umo Eno, a pastor, entrepreneur, and visionary leader who is redefining what it means to prepare young people for the future.

At the Ibom Ignite 2025 Conference, themed “Ignite to Accelerate,” held at the Ibom-LED Centre in Uyo, Governor Eno once again demonstrated his firm belief that the future of Akwa Ibom, and indeed Nigeria, lies in equipping the youth with digital skills, entrepreneurial spirit, and the right mindset to thrive in a fast-changing world.

“You must learn as a young person to start somewhere,” he told the eager audience of over 1,500 young people, entrepreneurs, and innovators. “If you believe in a dream, live for it and avoid distractions. Don’t listen to naysayers… the same people who doubt you today will applaud you tomorrow.”

It was not a politician speaking from a script. It was a mentor, speaking from experience.

For Governor Eno, Ibom Ignite is not just another government initiative , it is a passion project born out of his own journey. The conference began in 2017 as a church-based youth empowerment programme to help young people overcome the mindset of entitlement and dependency.

“I was tired of seeing young people angry with life, as if the world owed them something,” he recalled. “So I said, let’s start something to show them how to turn ideas into enterprise.”

That small step, then within the church, has grown into a state-backed digital inclusion movement, complete with innovation labs, startup grants, and leadership training platforms. Ibom Ignite has become the largest youth entrepreneurship and innovation gathering in the South-South, helping to turn youthful energy into creative capital.

Governor Eno’s personal story gives this movement authenticity. Having started his hospitality business — the Royalty Group — with just five rooms in 1995, he embodies the power of small beginnings and disciplined growth. “When you talk of an Akwa Ibom brand,” he smiled, “see me standing here.”

Unlike many political leaders who inherited structures, Pastor Umo Eno is building an ecosystem, one that connects young people with the tools, mentors, and opportunities to compete in the digital economy.

His ARISE Agenda, the strategic blueprint for his administration, emphasizes Innovation, Skills Development, and Entrepreneurship as the drivers of sustainable prosperity. Through initiatives like the Ibom-LED Entrepreneurship Accelerator, Dakadda Skills Acquisition Centre, and Digital Innovation Labs, the government is democratizing access to digital literacy and creating pathways for startups to thrive.

At the Ibom Ignite 2025 event, the state’s commitment was further demonstrated through the announcement of the Ibom Ignite Entrepreneurship and Innovation Grant,  a funding initiative designed to help bold ideas transition into viable, scalable businesses.

“Before acceleration can happen, there must be ignition — a spark that fuels growth, vision, and transformation,” said Pastor Imo-Abasi Jacob, Chairman of the Planning Committee. “That’s what Ibom Ignite stands for: turning passion into purpose.”

In his keynote, Obafemi Banigbe, CEO of Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services, applauded Akwa Ibom’s growing tech ecosystem and its leadership’s foresight. “This state has the potential to become the next technology and innovation hub in Nigeria,” he said. “But the real transformation will come from vision, human capital, and action.”

Banigbe’s words reflect the broader impact of Governor Eno’s digital inclusion agenda. Across Akwa Ibom, thousands of young people are learning to code, innovate, and build enterprises through public-private collaborations encouraged by the governor.

At the Ibom-LED Centre, for instance, young entrepreneurs are trained in design thinking, product development, and digital marketing. In partnership with global institutions like the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, the state is also providing mentorship, training, and market access to local startups.

One participant, 23-year-old software developer Nsikan Friday, described the governor’s vision as “the bridge between hope and opportunity.”

“Before Ibom Ignite, I was teaching myself coding from YouTube with no direction,” he said. “Now, I have mentors, I’ve built an app for small businesses, and my team just got shortlisted for the Innovation Grant. This is life-changing.”

But for Pastor Eno, the vision extends beyond coding and startups. It is about reshaping the mindset of young Akwa Ibomites — from dependence to determination.

“Young people must stop waiting for handouts,” he declared. “We are giving you platforms, not promises — opportunities, not pity. You must take responsibility for your dreams.”

His words capture a leadership philosophy rooted in empowerment, not entitlement. As an entrepreneur who rose from humble beginnings, he understands that digital transformation is as much about attitude as it is about access.

This is why the Ibom Ignite movement blends faith, motivation, and practical learning. It teaches young people not only how to succeed, but why they must persevere. In a state once defined by civil service jobs, a new generation of problem solvers and innovators is emerging.

The success of Ibom Ignite has attracted a network of national and global partners. Speakers and facilitators at this year’s conference included O’rtega Ogra, Senior Special Assistant on Digital Media to the President; Prof. Enoidem Usoro, Rector of the Dakadda Skills Centre; Idorenyen Enang, CEO of Corporate Shepherd Ltd; and George Iniabasi Essien, a Guinness World Record holder and broadcaster.

Each shared insights on leadership, innovation, and resilience — reinforcing Governor Eno’s vision that digital inclusion must be accompanied by personal discipline and strong values.

Rev. Godwin Akpan Amaowoh, General Secretary of the Assemblies of God Nigeria, summarized it best: “Start small, grow big — but as you grow, remember those who helped you rise. That is the spirit of sustainable success.”

Governor Umo Eno’s story, from a young entrepreneur to a visionary governor, mirrors the story he wants for Akwa Ibom’s youth: resilience, innovation, and purpose. But at its core, his leadership is deeply human.

He does not just speak of data and devices; he speaks of dreams and dignity. To him, digital inclusion is not about technology alone, but about giving every young person, in Uyo, Oron, Ikot Ekpene, and Eket, a chance to be seen, be heard, and be empowered.

Under his watch, the state’s digital economy is expanding, startups are multiplying, and the conversation has shifted from “unemployment” to “entrepreneurship.”

It is a quiet transformation, but one that is already shaping the destiny of a generation.

As the lights dimmed at the Ibom Ignite 2025 closing session, Governor Eno’s message still echoed in the hall:

“Don’t waste this opportunity. In our days, we didn’t have conferences like this. We struggled. But we decided to make it easier for those coming after us. That is the essence of leadership, making the road smoother for others.”

And with that, he walked off the stage, a leader not chasing applause, but planting seeds.

In Akwa Ibom, those seeds are taking root in the minds of young dreamers, creators, and innovators. The ignition has happened. The acceleration has begun.
